Director Christian Petzold (Barbara, Phoenix) decreases the chance of Anna Seghers’s 1944 book, in which companies from the Nazis stuck in Lyons order for ships to North America: It’s just Lyons, only the time trappings are raised and numbers soon leaving all-purpose “rebels.” At the center of the story is a quiet-motion dark-identity parody in which a concentration-camp escapee, Georg (the charismatic Franz Rogowski, who gives a connection to Joaquin Phoenix), provides the name of a well-known writer who just Georg colleagues performed death also when issues intensely for the author’s woman (Paula Beer). The natural, active, also rolling topography is very difficult, but the film is nevertheless important.
