A coolly dazzling autobiographical film by this British artist-director Joanna Hogg, who takes normally give you your actual moment — and stops you for over-sharers, the spoon-feeders. Her hero (Honor Swinton Byrne, child of Tilda, who believes her mother onscreen) is a well-off, culturally responsible 24-year-old film senior who needs to make a video about a boy turning up by the grotty docks near Newcastle but is thrown off track by her now, violently assaulted, and (as it turns out) heroin-addicted boyfriend (Tom Burke). At points, the film looks too distanced, but it’s nevermore an natural or routine. Hogg insures you that money is the only real way to tell a tale with any emotional complexity.
