Lady Tiger is a psychological drama film co-written and directed by Shyamaprasad. This film is a kind of psycho-sexual murder mystery. Key to the film is the concept of the #Electra complex; a daughter's psychosexual competition with her mother for her father's affection. A rueful journey into the bruised familial bonds of an aristocratic household in India, the film explores desire and loss.
The story unravels in Amarath the ancestral house of Abraham, which has a long history of mysterious deaths and sly relations.
The film is based on the story of the Greek mythological character Electra, although it has a contemporary setting in an aristocratic family in India. It draws strongly on four adaptations of the myth: Electra by Sophocles, Electra by Euripides, Oresteia by Aeschylus and Mourning Becomes Electra by Eugene O’Neill.
Written & Directed By Shyam Prasad
Music: Alphons Joseph
The film (#Electra in Malayalam) premiered at the International Film Festival of India. It made its international premiere at the 7th Dubai International Film Festival.
Story: Regina (Nayantara) lives in a world torn within passion and obsession. She is so possessive of her dad Abraham (Prakash Raj), that when he turns back from his farm in Jaffna, she plans to kill his mind about his wife Diana (Manisha Koirala) holding an affair with Isaac (also played by Prakash Raj).
When Abraham comes, he is at first ignorant of the coming drama. However, by the dawn of the next day, he is dead. Overwhelmed with rage and grief, Regina blames her mom for the death and seeks revenge. When Elektra's colleague, Edwin (Skanda Ashok) – who is troubled by an Oedipus complex – arrives for the funeral, Regina tells him on their mother's claimed affair.
In the midst of the shame, Regina turns to police director Peter (Biju Menon), who is in love with her, as a source of calm and sanity. But Regina and Edwin end up destroying each other, caught by illegal desires. Regina is brutally deceived.
Lady Tiger is the most mysterious of all the films made by Shyamaprasad so far. The English title of the movie is Light After Dark. About the "darkness mode" in the film, Shyamaprasad said:
"The film goes into the dark pits of the soul. How much evil is the human mind capable of and how can we redeem ourselves? How do we understand and deal with the guilt? I am involved in why human people do some things or choose not to do some things. To what degree do we go to achieve purpose and happiness in life. Is the method rewarding? Is there a price to be paid? It is a philosophical and psychological quest. We make these decisions every day in our lives. It is a critical and fundamental issue that is being tested in an affectionate family story. It is not overly cool until the very end when Diana, the lead character, grows into this more understanding and more helpful person"
